According to reports from Don Balon, Real Madrid have joined the race to sign Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt. The 19-year centre-back is one of the rising talents and has been an integral part of Ajax since joining the senior team in 2016. So far, De Ligt has made 95 appearances for Ajax, scoring 9 goals and providing 5 assists. This season, the Dutchman has made 33 appearances for the club, scoring three goals and providing two assists.

Several teams have shown interest in signing de Ligt. These include Barcelona, Juventus, PSG, Manchester United and Manchester City. Barcelona are the favorites to sign the teenager, specially after signing Frenkie de Jong last month. Barca see de Ligt as a replacement for Gerard Pique. De Ligt’s father however said a  few months back that a move to Juventus is possible.

Real Madrid also see de Ligt as a replacement for their defensive mainstay Sergio Ramos. Los Blancos are willing to make a bid greater than that of Barca’s.

De Ligt himself said a while back that the rumors linking him to top clubs make him laugh. Ajax know that de Ligt is an integral cog in their machine and they certainly won’t let go of De Ligt that easily.

Real Madrid face Ajax in the Champions League round of 16.
