They apparently had an original bid turned town

According to Italian newspaper Gazzetta Dello Sport, Liverpool have made in improved €18 million (£12.9 million) bid for Inter Milan midfielder Mateo Kovacic.

The Reds were rumoured to have originally bid £7.5 million for the playmaker, who the Merseyside club eye as a possible replacement for LA Galaxy bound Steven Gerrard.

Liverpool are hopeful that their most recent bid will be enough to persuade the Croatia international to swap Serie A for the Premier League in this summer’s transfer window.

Milan want money

However, Internazionale value Kovacic and are set to disappoint Liverpool with another rejection. The only way the 21-year old will leave the San Siro and move to Anfield is if Liverpool table a bid of £18 million, which Inter Milan boss Roberto Mancini is holding out for.

The attacking midfielder has scored five goals in 45 appearances in all competitions for both club and country this campaign.
