David Gold confirms Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal wanted starlet
West Ham United chief David Gold has revealed on his Twitter account that Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal all wanted to sign Reece Oxford.
The teenager burst onto the scene after a stand-out performance against Arsenal on the opening day of the season, a game which they won 2-0 much to the surprise of many, and Gold has now revealed that the trio all wanted to sign him.
The 16-year-old has already featured six times this season for Slaven Bilic following that Man of the Match display at the Emirates Stadium, and his talent hasn’t been ignored elsewhere.
According to Gold, Oxford was a wanted man before he signed his first ever professional contract, with City, Chelsea and Arsenal all after his signature.
Giants Wanted Oxford
“We had to beat off Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal to keep Reece Oxford on a long-term deal,” co-chairman Gold tweeted.
The club’s academy director has also revealed that the club’s hierarchy were desperate to keep the teenager away from the big-boys.
“As a club we already had the player. Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal wanted him and the value was ridiculous.
“We have to give them so much so young just to keep them. You haven’t got a choice.”
