Andoni Zubizarreta was  sacked from his job at Barcelona on Monday after allowing the club to sell Cesc Fabregas.

Zubizarreta, along with several other club officials, was sacked as the Catalan club prepare for their next election process at the Nou Camp.

According to reports in Spain, Zubizarreta lost his job due to the sale of Cesc Fabregas to Chelsea in the summer, for ÂŁ30 million.

Fabregas has gone onto impress in his first six months at Stamford Bridge, with the 27-year-old earning several plaudits since arriving back to London.

Spanish newspaper Marca write: “With Xavi Hernandez’s retirement only a matter of time, Barca appeared to have two tailor-made, home-grown candidates in their ranks to take on the maestro’s mantle in midfield.

“However, Pep Guardiola poached Thiago Alcantara for Bayern by paying his (bafflingly low) release clause and Cesc Fabregas returned to London in the summer following Ivan Rakitic’s arrival.

A statement confirming the exit read: “The FC Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu has decided to terminate as of today the contract of the club’s Director of Football, Andoni Zubizarreta.

“The President, in the name of the club, thanks Andoni Zubizarreta for his contribution, dedication and professionalism over the last four years in his role at the head of the club’s football area.

Zubizarreta had been a director at the Nou Camp for four years.
