Red Devils spent £36m on Anthony Martial

Manchester United paid their extravagant fee for Anthony Martial to ensure they secured his signature ahead of any potential European rivals.

United added to their ranks with the deadline-day signing of the 19-year-old teenager, with questions raised about the price tag of the player in question.

Reports coming out of Old Trafford suggest that the Red Devils paid the amount to ensure they signed Martial this summer.

According to reports, several European giants were monitoring the forward and were expected to launch formal bids for him next year after he spent a year in Ligue 1 playing regularly.

Manchester City, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain were all tracking the teenager and were all expected to monitor his performances throughout the season.

Van Gaal Confident

Despite the hefty price tag upon Martial’s shoulders, his new manager believes the forward has the potential to become a world class player.

Van Gaal said: “Anthony is a naturally talented, young, multi-functional forward with great potential. He has all the attributes to become a top football player, but we need to give him time to adjust to his new environment.”
