Southampton are interested in re-signing Rickie Lambert on a six-month loan deal, despite selling him to Liverpool just a few months ago.

The 32-year-old secured his dream move to his boyhood club over the Summer in a ÂŁ4million deal, but has struggled for first-team football and with his international place on the line, he is keen to find regular first-team opportunities.

Lambert is set to be nudged out of the England set-up by the likes of; Saido Berahino, Charlie Austin and Danny Ings, all whom are on hot-form for their current clubs, and the veteran is keen to prevent that from happening.

However, The Saints face an uphill battle in luring the striker back to St Marys due to Liverpool struggling for goals and struggling for fit strikers, with Daniel Sturridge ruled out for longer due to another groin injury, but according to reports, if Brendan Rodgers is successful in signing a striker, he could allow Lambert to return to his former-club.

Rodgers is showing interest in Berahino from West Brom and Jackson Martinez from FC Porto, and if one does arrive in January, that could see Lambert return to Southampton until the end of the season.
