Manchester City completed the £32million transfer of Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala, who has been tipped to become one of Europe’s finest defenders by Manuel Pellegrini.
David Luiz in then joined French giants Paris-Saint Germain for £50m earlier this summer and Ferdinand, who is now at QPR, has questioned the size of these transfer fees.
He tweeted: “Mangala 31m & Luiz 50m…how much would Varane cost with these valuations at the moment ??! 60-70m??”
Ferdinand however took a step further and wondered how much likes of Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate would be worth if they were playing and were fit.
He added: “Imagine how much these guys would cost today-a fit King & Woodgate, Terry, Caragher, Sol, Vidic,Stam,Nesta,Ayala!? Never mind Franz & Bobby!”
Ferdinand is a big fan of Varane, who was previously linked with a move to Chelsea, but the Blues are now thought to be closing in on a £30m deal for Roma defender Mehdi Benatia.
