Everton manager Roberto Martinez has revealed that he has no regrets about turning down the Liverpool job when he was at Wigan Athletic last Summer.

The Spanish boss was on the shortlist to replace Kenny Dalglish and even met up with John W Henry during the Summer break, but he eventually turned down the opportunity in order to remain at Wigan, and the job eventually went to Swansea City boss Brendan Rodgers.

However, just 12 months later, Martinez finally left Wigan after they were finally relegated from the Premier League and the Spaniard finally ended up in Merseyside, but with Everton instead.

Ahead of this weekend’s derby, the Everton-boss has admitted that he has no regrets about turning down the Liverpool job.

“It’s been a question asked many times.

“Things in life happen for a reason and it was well documented that summer. It was a time of trying to find out what was next from my point of view and Wigan Athletic at that time.

“Everything ended up that it wasn’t the right time or the right move. I always believe everything in football and life happens for a reason and I am extremely proud and honoured to be manager of Everton.”
