Rodri inspired to play in centre-back again for Manchester City

Manchester City’s Rodri is slowly becoming acquainted to the centre-back position just like Fernandinho.

Pep Guardiola has been dealt a major injury blow this season in his defensive numbers. This forced him to deploy both of his defensive midfielders in the heart of his backline against Crystal Palace. Rodri took inspiration from his performance in the 2-0 Selhurst Park victory and is also open to the idea of playing there again.

“It was my first time,” he told reporters after Palace game. “But when you look at centre-back, I don’t think it is different from holding midfield.

“You have many same qualities; you have to be strong, good in the air and, here at City, good with your feet. Of course, it is another position. You have things to learn as you are the last in the line. For me, it was great to learn that sometimes you can play in other positions and it is good to feel other positions.

“I spoke with Guardiola; he was confident to put me in that position and I need some matches, but I fit in that position. This position is new for me. For Fernandinho, I think he is doing great performances at centre-back. He is top level now in that position, so we need to keep going to keep doing things well and he is doing that.”
