Roma have confirmed that goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis has signed a new deal with the Italian Serie A club, which means that they will not pursue a proposed deal for Petr Cech.

De Sanctis, aged 37, has impressed for the title challengers this season, keeping seven clean sheets in 14 Serie A games, with Roma currently sitting second in the league.

The new deal will see the keeper stay in the Italian capital until the summer of 2016, bringing an end to any speculation regarding a potential transfer of Chelsea keeper Petr Cech.

Cech was heavily linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge earlier in the season, with the Czech Republic international failing to regain his place in the starting line-up, losing out to Thibaut Courtois for the number one jersey at the West London club.

De Sanctis also revealed he wants to finish his career in Rome, having signed from fellow Serie A side Napoli in the summer of 2013.

“Today is an important day for me,” De Sanctis told Roma Radio. “I am very happy that Roma has given me this opportunity.

“I will remain at Roma until 2016 and to work for Roma gives me a lot of motivation but also a big sense of responsibility..

“At my age, you have to make decisions on a yearly basis and if I continue to hand.

“I would like to end my career in the best possible way.

“I want to give joy to our fans and to my coach.”
