Romania vs Switzerland Match Preview

Romania vs Switzerland – Match Preview; the two sides kick-off the second round of Group A fixtures. Romania will take on Switzerland today, with the hope that they can finally get some points from the game.

Romania have not won a game at the Euros since 2000 – that’s 16 years without a win and they’ll be hoping they can end that bad spell tonight against the Swiss.

Switzerland though will have other ideas. They got off to a good start by claiming a win over Albania and they’ll want to claim yet another three points in this game and they are more than capable of doing so.

Romania Euro’s History

This year is their fifth Euros tournament but it hasn’t gone well for them at any of those tournaments so far. Their last win – as previously mentioned – came back in 2000 against England and since then they haven’t done too great.

In fact, the side haven’t qualified for a major tournament for eight years and so they’ll be hoping the Euro 2016 dream doesn’t end anytime soon.

Switzerland’s Euro History

Despite competing at three previous Euros tournaments, the Swiss don’t have too much of a good record either. In all three of those tournaments they failed to make it out of their group and they’ll be hoping history doesn’t repeat itself this year.

They have managed to claim three points already and another three points against Romania is likely to secure a place in the last 16 and end that bad run.

Romania vs Switzerland Match Preview: Key Players

Romania Key Player – Vlad Chiriches

Romania will need the former Tottenham man to be on his best form against Switzerland. The national side’s best asset is their defensive solidity and while they struggle to score too many at the other end, if they can keep the Swiss out, then they will claim at least a valuable point.

To do that, they’ll need Chiriches to be focused and ready to defend with his life. He has established himself as one of Romania’s most vital players due to his superb defensive showings, helping Romania have one of the best defensive records in Europe in qualifying. Switzerland Key Player – Granit Xhaka

Many would pick Xherdan Shaqiri as Switzerland’s key player for this game but the new Arsenal signing is just as vital to the national side. The midfielder can help control the game with his passes and play in the middle of the field and if he can help start attacks – while also keeping Romania at bay with interceptions and tackles – then the Swiss could get another three points.

Xhaka doesn’t mind having a go for goal himself if he gets in the right position and could pop up with a vital goal if the Swiss need it. Switzerland are also a big threat from corners and with Xhaka standing at six foot tall, he could be a threat from set-pieces too. Read more about the key players in Switzerland Euro 2016 squad.
