Footballers top the list of wealthy stars

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have been named as the richest sports stars in the world- according to Forbes.

Forbes created the list by including all the salaries and sponsorship bonuses the superstars earned between June 1st 2015 and June 1st 2016, and released the list today.

Real Madrid’s Ronaldo comes out on top, a man who’s had major successes this year for his club, winning the Champions League. He earned $88million (ÂŁ52,800,000) with his salary and endorsements were combined over the last 12 months.

Barcelona star Messi wasn’t far behind, earning $81.4million (ÂŁ48,840,000) in a year where he’s won La Liga, the Copa Del Rey and the Ballon D’or.

The next footballer on the list is Barcelona’s Neymar, who is way down in 21st spot. The maths has suggested that he has ‘only’ earned $37.5million (ÂŁ22.5million) over the last year. He is the highest earning Brazilian on the list.

The other high-earners

The highest Englishman on the list is Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton, who rolled in a pretty impressive $46million (ÂŁ27.6million) total following winning the F1 drivers’ title in November.

Basketball’s LeBron James and Kevin Durant sit 3rd and 5th in the list, earning $77.2million (ÂŁ46,320,000) and $56.2million (ÂŁ33,720,000) respectively. Tennis legend Roger Federer sits in between them, as he earned $67.8million (ÂŁ40,680,000)
