United forward to get minutes in Under-21 match tonight

Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney is set to make a return from injury tonight and start in an Under-21’s match for the club.

The United captain will line-up against Middlesborough at Old Trafford tonight for the first time since damaging knee ligaments in United’s 2-1 defeat to Sunderland on February 13th.

Phil Jones and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson are also included in the Red Devils’ starting XI.

Rooney returned to light training last month and he’s now attempting to get back to full fitness and put himself in contention for a spot in Roy Hodgson’s Euro 2016 England squad.

The 30-year-old’s place in Roy Hodgson’s squad has been the subject of debate in recent weeks given the impressive form of Tottenham’s Harry Kane and Leicester’s Jamie Vardy.

In his absence, England came from 2-0 down to beat Germany 3-2 in Berlin although they lost to Holland 2-1 at Wembley three days later in the last international break.
