Mourinho’s men began the season with a 3-1 win at Bournemouth

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney believes his side have sent a warning to the rest of the Premier League, as they breezed past Bournemouth on the opening weekend of the season.

Goals from Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic clinched the win, despite the Cherries pulling a goal back through Adam Smith, to hand Jose Mourinho an opening day Premier League win as United boss.

Rooney believes exciting times lay ahead under the management of Mourinho, who brought in big-money and highly-rated signings in Eric Bailly, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and world-record transfer Paul Pogba, as well Ibrahimovic.

“I thought we won it with a bit of style in the second half. One down, 37 to go,” said Rooney.

“We have made a real statement bringing in four great signings and the new manager. There is a lot of excitement from ourselves and the fans.”

Meanwhile, the captain also shunned any claims he is past his best, saying: “I’ve not had to prove anything to anyone. I’ve been playing a long time. I believe I’m good enough to play.”

Pogba could make his United debut on Friday, when the Red Devils host Southampton, after missing the opening game following a suspension that carried over from his time at Juventus.
