One of the tasks faced by new Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal when he arrives at Old Trafford is to select his captain, vacated by Nemanja Vidic, with vice captain Patrice Evra almost certainly on his way out.

Wayne Rooney has thrown his name in the hat, by exclaiming in a recent interview “I am interested in the captaincy, “I’ve captained United a few times and to get it on a full-time basis would be great.”

With 10 years experience playing for Manchester United and with the fans behind the idea of Rooney being captain he has stated he would be “honoured” to take the role.

Van Gaal who currently is the manager of the Dutch national team last year made Rooney’s team mate Robin Van Persie captain of the Netherlands describing him as a fantastic leader. Rooney has said he wouldn’t have a problem if his strike partner got the nod stating, “Robin is captain of his country, he has captained Arsenal and if Robin gets the nod to be captain, then I’m sure he’ll do a great job.”
