Russian MP Igor Lebedev says he ‘did not see anything terrible about fans fighting’ and making Football Hooliganism into a sport would turn fan aggression in a peaceful direction

A Russian member of parliament has actually put a proposal forward to turn football hooliganism into a spectator sport.

Igor Lebedev thinks thousands of fans come to see teams of twenty unarmed competitors fight it out in stadiums.

Masses of highly trained hooligans from Russia, which is set to host next year’s 2018 world cup, fought it out with English fans on the streets of Marseille, France during the 2016 European Championship.

You may remember Mr Lebedev was the one who said at the time he ‘did not see anything terrible about fans fighting’ and told the Russians fighting: ‘Well done lads, keep it up!’

However, despite his enthusiasm for football hooliganism, worry not, as Mr Lebedev has strongly insisted that Russian policing means foreign fans will not be in danger at the World Cup.

‘We’ve taken all the safety measures, modernised legislation,’ he said.

‘Not a single tourist has any reason to fear traveling to our country in the summer of 2018.’
