Sacked by Sheffield Wednesday

After a 20 month stint at Hillsborough Dave Jones has been sacked by Sheffield Wednesday.

Jones was relieved of his duties as first team manager following a 2-0 defeat by Blackpool which left the owls six points from safety.

A statement on the club`s official website read “Dave Jones has been relieved of his duties as first team manager with immediate effect. The club would like to thank Dave for all of his hard work and wish him well for the future. Sheffield Wednesday will be making no further comment at this time”

Jones took over at Hillsborough in March 2012 on a three-and-a-half-year contract, replacing Gary Megson despite the club riding high in third place in League One at the time. The former Stockport, Southampton, Wolves and Cardiff boss duly guided the Owls to promotion.

The club were subsequently embroiled in a scrap for survival last season before Jones took the club to safety and a 18th-placed finish. However, a disappointing start to the new season has force chairman Milan Mandaric to take action, Sheffield is currently in 23rd place with only one single victory in their opening 16 league games.

Stuart Pearce and former Wednesday players Paolo di Canio and Benito Carbone are among the early favourites to replace Jones at Hilllsborough.
