Sam Allardyce takes dig at Liverpool’s handling of Stewart Downing

West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce has revealed that he has signed the Aston Villa Stewart Downing rather than the Liverpool version.

The Hammers boss has admitted that Downing will be his last signing of the summer after spending £6million on the Englishman and Allardyce is hoping that he sees the old Downing at Upton Park.

Back in 2011, Liverpool were so impressed by the Villa midfield-man, they spent a whopping £20million on him, and the West Ham manager is hoping he can help re-find the Stewart Downing of old.

The 29-year-old only managed three goals during his two year spell at Anfield, but Allardyce is hoping that he can go back to his attacking style that saw him be a hit at both Aston Villa and Middlesborough.

‘I was more Stewart Downing Aston Villa than I was Stewart Downing Liverpool,’ said Allardyce. ‘That’s more of what I’m looking for.

‘That’s no reflection on what Stewart did at Liverpool because he was asked to play a different way than he was at Aston Villa.

‘As everyone knows I like crosses and there are lots of managers who don’t like any more.

‘Stewart is a quality player, value for money, somebody who sits at the top of our performance stats. As well as a nice guy.’
