Samuel Eto’o was close to joining Arsenal in 2000

Chelsea striker Samuel Eto’o has revealed that he was so close to signing for Arsenal back in 2000 before he eventually joined Real Mallorca.

The 32-year-old has just transferred to the Premier League after enjoying spells in Spain, Italy and Russia, but the Cameroon international has revealed that he could have been in the Premier League 13-years-ago.

According to the striker, was just hours away from joining Arsene Wenger’s side, but after meeting with the Mallorca manager, he chose to join the Spanish side instead.

“I met Luis at a crucial moment in my life where I had to take the right direction – and thanks to him I did,” he told The Sun. “I was about to sign that very afternoon at Arsenal and maybe I would have never been the player I am today. Luis picked me, then I ended up joining Barcelona”.

“That decision changed everything.”

Since that move, Eto’o has gone on to win the Champions League with both FC Barcelona and Inter Milan.
