Fans and the media are thrown over Saul Niguez’s most recent tweet reading – “New Club! I’ll announce it in 3 days”.
Manchester United have long been the favourites for his signature despite him being valued at €150 million (£134m).
This is a highly unusual scenario but we have previously noted Atletico Madrid players turning their departures into grand events. We have previously seen Antoine Griezmann announce his contract extension with Atletico as “La Decision”. Clubs almost always the ones to make official announcements first regarding player signings.
If Saul were to leave the Wanda Metropolitano, United seems like his most likely destination. The midfielder is one of the last players in Spain who is still under a third party contract agreement. Former United CEO, Peter Keyon and controversial agent, Jorge Mendes owns 40% of his contract rights. Hence, whatever amount Atletico pockets – a significant amount will end up in Kenyon and Mendes’ pockets.
The truth behind the tweet will only be revealed on Wednesday, 3 June 2020. Till then it is all speculation. The Red Devils faithful will be at the edge of their seats waiting for official news even with the unlikely nature of the transfer. Saul was supposed to be untouchable with that ridiculous release clause.
