Seven set for United axe

Louis Van Gaal may axe seven of his players this summer, including Robin Van Persie and Radamel Falcao, as he continues his overhaul of the Red Devils squad.

Van Persie and Falcao, two of the club’s main strikers, have failed to impress the Dutch manager and so face uncertain futures at the club.

Van Persie, who hit 26 Premier League goals in his debut season at Old Trafford, has only managed eight so far this term and so may be axed along with Colombian Falcao, who has reportedly been in a bust up with the manager after his surprise exclusion from the squad that lost to Southampton 1-0 on Sunday.

However, they are not the only members of the former Bayern Munich manager who are under pressure to retain their roles at the club.

David De Gea, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans and Rafael Da Silva all have just 18 months left on their contract and with none close to new deals, Van Gaal may cash in.

De Gea has been attracting interest from Real Madrid as a replacement for the ageing Iker Casillas.

Defenders Jones, Evans, Smalling and Rafael have all been plagued down with injuries this term and have also done very little to convince their manager that they deserve new deals.

The Manchester club are reportedly targeting Mats Hummels, Nathaniel Clyne and Dani Alves, as the 63 year-old shapes his team into his own mould.
