Sherwood: The silence is deafening on my future

Tim Sherwood has claimed ‘the silence is deafening’ regarding his future as Tottenham Hotspur manager, but has insisted he does not want to become an assistant manager. Sherwood was brought in as a quick replacement for Andre Villas Boas in December, and after good results was offered the job until the end of next season. However, there have been constant rumours that Sherwood will be replaced this summer, with Dutch coach Louis Van Gaal linked with the job. There have been reports that Sherwood could work as an assitant to the new boss, but he has declared that that isn’t a role he’s interested in.

“The silence is deafening, isn’t it?” said Sherwood after Tottenham’s 4-0 loss to Chelsea on Saturday, “Look, the decision is down to Daniel. It’s up to the club to decide. One thing I can guarentee though is that no one cares more than me. I want the team to do very well and it hurts me when they don’t. I need people in the dressing room to be just as hurting as I am.”

He added, “I never wanted to be number 2. I’d be no good, I’m too opinionated. I wouldn’t want that job.”

Spurs’ defeat to Chelsea left them 4 points adrift of the Champions League places, though they have played 3 games more than Manchester City. Sherwood insisted that they have no chance of a top 4 finish if they can’t beat the big teams, and bemoaned the ‘lack of characters’ during the loss at Stamford Bridge,

“We aren’t going to finish in the top 4 if we can’t beat top 4 teams. It ain’t going to happen. You’re miles away unless you can beat the top teams. You have to pick up some points. Ok, we beat Man United and Everton around us, but you can’t rely on rolling over smaller sides, it doens’t work like that.”

“But onto the next match. That is the nature of the game.”
