Manchester United and Liverpool are known as a fierce footballing rivalry, but today, the Manchester club condemned some of the songs that some fans were singing about Liverpool in their 4-0 home win against Wigan today.

A minority of Man United fans were taunting Liverpool and singing innapropriate chants about the Hillsborough disaster which has come back into the press this week after the release of Independant Panel Reports.

On Friday, Sir Alex Ferguson said that he wanted both sets of fans to stop singing and taunting about both club’s disasters. The heated football rivalry has seen Manchester fans singing about Hillsborough and it has seen Liverpool fans singing about the Munich disaster.

A United spokesperson said the club “deplore” such songs.

After Saturday’s incidents, United released a statement that read: “The manager has made the club’s position very clear on this matter.

“It is now up to the fans to respect that.”
