Player greeted by fans at local airport upon arrival

Martin Skrtel has passed a medical at Turkish side Fenerbache, taking a huge step towards leaving Liverpool.

The Slovakian has been with Liverpool for eight seasons, after signing from Zenit Saint Petersburg in 2008, but manager Jurgen Klopp has allowed him to move on despite a lack of defensive cover at Anfield.

Skrtel was greeted by fans after flying to Istanbul on Tuesday night to finalise his move, which he expects to complete on Wednesday, and held up a Fenerbahce scarf before talking to reporters.

‘I’m happy to be here,’ the defender said. ‘I did not expect this kind of welcome.’

‘I talked to Miroslav Stoch (his Slovakian team-mate) and he said all good things about the city and the club.

‘Liverpool is a giant club but Fenerbahce is very stable and has rapidly progressed since the beginning. Fenerbahce is a giant club so I am delighted to accept their offer.

‘I came here today to finalise the last details so hopefully we can complete everything and I can be pictured as a Fenerbahce player.’
