Solskjaer doesn’t want Lukaku to play as the target man

Manchester United registered their third consecutive win under new caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the Red Devils inflicted a 4-1 defeat on Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Paul Pogba struck twice in the first half along with Marcus Rashford before Romelu Lukaku came off the bench to make it 4-1 for the hosts. The victory saw United close the gap on 5th-placed Arsenal to three points after the Gunners lost 5-1 to Liverpool on Saturday.

It was the first time that Romelu Lukaku featured under Solskjaer after his return from a compassionate Christmas leave. The Belgian endured a difficult start to the season under Mourinho and struggled for form and fitness but he really came into his own on Saturday.

And Solskjaer has made it clear that Lukaku will not play as a target man up front for United as long as he is in charge at Old Trafford.

“At times he’s a good target man, but if you tell him to be a target man he’ll never face the goal,” Solskjaer told reporters. “Today [Sunday] he was side-on and he’s got the attributes of a top, top striker.

“We need to work on his fitness, but I’m delighted. Even though he was half a yard offside [for his goal], it was a good finish.”
