The football world is in mourning after South Africa international Jayden Adams passed away at the age of 25, just weeks after representing his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

South African World Cup Star Jayden Adams Dies at 25

South Africa’s minister of sport, arts and culture, Gayton McKenzie, confirmed the devastating news on Saturday.

“South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his team-mates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international,” McKenzie said in a statement.

Cape Town police have opened an investigation after discovering the body of a 25-year-old man at a house in Schotschekloof, a suburb in central Cape Town. The cause of death remains unclear.

“Jayden had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage and distinction,” the South African Football Players Union said in a statement.

Adams featured in all three of South Africa’s group matches as Bafana Bafana reached the knockout stages for the first time in their history.

He started against Mexico and the Czech Republic, also coming off the bench in the victory over South Korea that secured their historic progression. South Africa eventually fell to co-hosts Canada in the round of 32.

The midfielder began his professional career at Stellenbosch FC, making his debut at age 19.

He joined Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025 and helped the club win the league title and the CAF Champions League.

Adams was part of the South Africa squad that reached the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals before earning his World Cup call-up.

“South African football has lost a gifted player, a proud servant of the game and a young life that still had so much to offer,” the players’ union added.

McKenzie urged the public and media to avoid speculation while investigators work to determine the circumstances surrounding Adams’ death.
