Saints fancy Liverpool outcast as replacement for want-away captain

Southampton are targeting Liverpool centre-back and outcast Mamadou Sakho as a replacement for their want-away captain Jose Fonte.

Sakho has not featured at all in Liverpool’s first team this season after falling out with manager Jurgen Klopp, with it all beginning with the ‘fat burner’ incident that got him suspended for a month towards the end of last season.

Southampton revealed on Thursday that captain and centre-back Jose Fonte had handed in a transfer request following a contract row.

But the Saints face competition for Sakho from Turkish giants Galatasaray.

Puel said: “We are aware of possibilities and opportunities.

“If a player will come to Southampton it is a player who can do good work and bring a strong level to the squad.”

And Fonte isn’t the only Southampton defender attracting attention, with Virgil Van Dijk being linked with a move away from St. Mary’s.

“Virgil is not for the sale.

“We haven’t had any bids and if we got any bids we wouldn’t consider them because it just doesn’t make sense to think we would release Virgil van Dijk in midseason when we have still got, we believe, all to play for.

“There haven’t been any enquiries but certainly the status of him at the moment is that he is simply not for sale.”
