The Saints are frontrunners for the 25-year-old who has 17 goals this season

Austin was offered £60,000-a-week but he refused and now the club look set to lose him.

West Brom and Newcastle are also rumoured to be interested in the QPR forward but Austin has expressed his desire to remain in the south.

He scored 17 goals for the Hoops this season but still couldn’t steer them away from Premier League relegation.

Asking price

With one year remaining on his contract clubs will be hoping for a cut-price deal but director of football, Les Ferdinand has ruled out the club becoming a “bargain bucket”.

He added: “Charlie has had a fantastic year in terms of scoring in the Premier League with 17 in his debut season.

He is fourth in the list of top scorers and that is in a team which has been relegated. That is a phenomenal strike rate.”

Rumoured interest

The Saints have been monitoring Austin’s situation closely but the news that Jay Rodriguez has just penned a new four-year deal will probably see them cool their interest.

Newcastle are still yet to secure their place in the Premier League next season and actually face QPR this weekend.
