Southampton set to confirm Mark Hughes as new boss in next 24 hours after sacking Mauricio Pellegrino.

Hughes, sacked by Stoke in January, is Southampton’s No.1 choice to replace Mauricio Pellegrino who was axed on Monday.

Mark Hughes is closing in on a return to Premier League management at Southampton. Talks between Hughes and the relegation-threatened south coast club have begun and his appointment could be confirmed within the next 24 hours provided they are concluded without a hitch.

Hughes, 54, has been lined up to become manager of the club he played for between 1998 and 2000 and would be supported by his trusted coaching sidekicks Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki.

Goalkeeping coach Dave Watson and senior first team coach Kelvin Davis, who are taking training today, are also expected to stay on and be part of the new coaching setup.

Southampton have moved quickly following Pellegrino’s departure by making their move for Hughes.

Hughes had been identified as an ideal potential successor as Southampton begun to draw up contingency plans when it became increasingly clear that Pellergino’s time was coming to an end.
