As Spain defeated the host Germany 2-1 in Stuttgart to go to the competition’s semi-finals, Lamine Yamal continued to shine at his first European Championships. On the right flank, Yamal, 16, made a fresh start for La Roja. With his appearance, the teenage star broke the record as the youngest football player ever to participate in a European quarterfinal.
After a fast start to the game, the teenager continually probed the German defense and helped Spain create opportunities. Yamal did this to become the first adolescent in history to generate more than 12 opportunities in a single European Championship competition. The La Masia wonderkid didn’t stop there; in the 51st minute, he set up Dani Olmo for the game-winning goal for Spain.
Lamine Yamal sets new Euros assists record
After assisting Olmo recently, Yamal, a Barcelona star, became the first teenager to record three assists in a single men’s European Championship or World Cup since records began to be kept in 1966. Along with 2008’s Cesc Fabregas, 2012’s David Silva, and 2021’s Olmo, Spain’s youngest-ever player is now only the fourth man to set up three goals for La Roja in a single Euro.
Not even a year old when Spain beat Germany in the Euro 2008 final, Yamal has only played in eight international matches, but in his 12 appearances wearing a Spain shirt, he has already racked up two goals and an astounding nine assists.
