Liverpool star could pay ÂŁ1.7m to reduce his contract

Liverpool have been rocked with the news that Raheem Stering could attempt to buy-one the last year of his contract, meaning Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City could buy him at a cut-price.

The England international currently has two years left on his deal at Anfield, but due to Premier League regulations, the winger could buy-out a year of his deal, meaning his contract would then expire in the Summer of 2016, rather than 2017.

It’s believed that it would cost Sterling ÂŁ1.7million to buy out a year of his contract, but he would soon make that back if he were to join a new club in signing on fees etc.

If the 20-year-old does choose to buy-out his last year at Liverpool, it would see his price-tag quickly diminish due to only having 12-months left on his deal.

That would then mean Brendan Rodgers and the Liverpool board would have to make a decision on what they do. Whether they keep Sterling and risk losing him on a free next year, or sell him this Summer for some cash.

Liverpool currently value Sterling at ÂŁ50million as they see him as one of Europe’s hottest talents, however, if his deal is cut to one year, his price-tag could be slashed by as much as 50%.

Liverpool don’t want to sell

As it stands, Liverpool are adamant that they won’t be selling their star to one of their fierce rivals in the Premier League, but if Sterling does eventually buy-out his contract, they may have to have a re-think.

The winger has already rejected a contract extension from The Reds as he believes he wasn’t offered enough. Sterling was offered ÂŁ100k-a-week from the club, but he quickly turned down the deal claiming he was worth more.

He then had an interview with BBC and confirmed that the rejection wasn’t down to money, it was down to being at a club who regularly compete for trophies.
