Frenchman completes permanent move away from Stoke City

Stoke City midfielder Steven N’Zonzi has joined La Liga side Sevilla in a deal worth £7million, breaking the club’s previous record of just £4.5m.

The Potters received £4.5m for Tuncay back in 2011 when German side Wolfsburg signed him, however, N’Zonzi has broken that deal after joining Sevilla for £7m.

The 26-year-old was expected to leave the Britannia Stadium over the summer, but to the annoyance of manager Mark Hughes, who wanted to keep the powerhouse midfielder.

Stoke snubbed a couple of formal offers for the Frenchman, but eventually caved and sold to the Spanish outfit.

Club Statement

A club statement earlier read: “The club would like to place on record its thanks to Steven and offer him our best wishes.”

N’Zonzi made 120 appearances for Stoke in the three years he was there. He arrived for just £3m from Blackburn Rovers.

The midfielder has signed a four-year deal in Sevilla and has a buyout clause of around £21m.

Hughes Disappointment

After the sale was confirmed, Hughes said the following: “We worked really hard to persuade him his future lay here but it didn’t seem to be enough for him.”

Asmir Begovic is expected to be next out the door as he edges close to a Chelsea move.
