The Potters defender will undergo back surgery after a series of ongoing issues

The 25-year-old has been limited to 65 minutes during pre-season and was sent for scans to assess the damage.

There was a good chance the former Manchester United player was going to be unavailable against Liverpool this weekend but the news reveals a much longer absence is likely.

The Englishman played a key role in helping the Potters finish in the top 10 last season, featuring 32 times for the Britannia Stadium club.

Chairman’s comments

Stoke City chairman Peter Coates has refused to point the finger at anyone but has expressed his fears about the situation.

“Of course we are disappointed with the situation, but no blame is attached to anyone, the view from people who understand these things was they thought he would be okay.

“I’m sure the medical personnel did all the right things. I’m afraid these things happen in sport and we are not blaming anybody” said Coates.

The Potters begin the new season at home against Liverpool – a team they thrashed 6-1 on the final day of last season, Charlie Adam scoring against his former employers.
