The Football Association has fined has fined Stoke City chairman Peter Coates £5000 after he implied there was a bias towards other teams from referees.

In November, the 76 year-old was punished for backing Mark Hughes’ criticism of referee Chris Foy in his failure to send off Alex Song when Stoke faced West Ham.

Coates told reporters at the time: “There does seem to be a bias towards other teams,”

Coates also made his feelings clear about Ryan Shawcross’ treatment by referees as he felt it was unjust, in addition to this he also criticised tevelsion pundit John Hartson who felt Victor Moses had dived during Swansea’s visit to the Britannia.

The FA have confirmed they have fined Coates for his remarks.

“Following an independent regulatory commission hearing, Peter Coates has been fined £5,000 in relation to media comments,” a statement read.

“The Stoke City chairman was charged with improper conduct in that his comments alleged and/or implied bias on the part of referees and/or brought the game into disrepute.

“Mr Coates denied the charge and requested a personal hearing at which the breach of FA Rule E3(1) was found proven. He was also warned as to his future conduct and ordered to pay £1,500 towards the cost of the hearing.”
