Mark Hughes admits deal if close for right-back

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes has confirmed that the club are working on a deal for right-back Glen Johnson.

The former-England international is a free agent following his release from Liverpool and Hughes has revealed the club are working on a deal for the defender.

The 30-year-old saw his deal at Anfield expire at the end of the season and after Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool informed him that no extension would be offered, Johnson was told to find a new club.

It’s now been revealed that the new club could be Stoke City after Hughes confirmed talks are ongoing.

“We are trying to progress as a team, Glen has played at a high level for a very long time and we can benefit from his experience,” he said.

If Johnson does complete the move to the Britannia Stadium, his first competitive game for The Potters could be against his old club, as Stoke host Liverpool on the opening day.
