Pearce feels West Ham fans will fall back in love with Arnautovic

Stuart Pearce feels that the West Ham fans will forgive Marko Arnautovic and fall back in love with the Austrian if he delivers the results on the pitch.

Arnautovic was left out of West Ham’s 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth last week and did not feature in the club’s shameful FA Cup exit at the hands of AFC Wimbledon amid speculations over his future but he is likely to be back in action very soon.

The 29-year-old was the subject of a £35 million bid from an unnamed Chinese club and wages of around £200,000-a-week was enough to convince the Austrian to make a move to the far east, with his agent claiming publicly that the striker wanted to leave West Ham.

However, Arnautovic has poured cold water on those speculations by signing a contract extension with the club, committing his future at east London.

“All it takes is his first goal. I don’t think they were ever really anti-Marko even when he said he wanted to leave,” Pearce told talkSPORT.

“Half of them sort of said ‘we will take the money and move on’.

“Some probably said to themselves, ‘look I understand it is a lot of money’.

“Underlying it all they will be absolutely delighted.

“I take it the chairman has organised his contract slightly better than what it was before, potentially, and he is happy to stay now.

“He’s a good player and to lose him would be a real disappointment for everyone at West Ham.”
