Liverpool owner John W. Henry has sensationally revealed that Luis Suarez DID have a £40million release clause in the contract he was under in the summer, but the club simply refused to sell him to Arsenal anyway. The Gunners infamously made a £40million + £1 for Suarez after being told that The Reds would be forced to accept any offer £40million+ but Henry stood firm and Suarez stayed, to see the Uruguayan hit the form of his life this season. Arsneal and Suarez’s agent Pere Guardiola have revealed that there was some confusion in Arsenal’s understanding of what the clause entitled to, with Liverpool insisting that they just needed to inform the player of bids of over £40million.

Speaking at a sports conference over the weekend, Henry said, “Luis Suarez is the top scorer in the Premier League, which is arguebly the best soccer league in the world. He had a buyout of £40m, Arsenal, one of our prime rivals, who we’re currently tied for second with at the moment, we were never going to sell to them. They offered £40m + £1. What we’ve found is that contracts don’t seem to matter a lot in England, in world football actually.”

“It doesn’t matter how long a player’s contract is, he decides when he is leaving. We sold Fernando Torres at the same time we bought Suarez for £50million, we didn’t want to, but we were forced to because the player wanted to leave. Since these contracts don’t seem to hold, we took the position that we’re just not selling. To anyone. It’s been great for Luis since, it’s been great for us.”

“We have 3 gentlemen up front right now [Suarez, Sturridge and Sterling], they are young, I think Luis and those three could be with us and playing together for a long time.”
