Suarez: I’d give up Golden Boot for top four finish

Luis Suarez has claimed he would happily trade in the Golden Boot award for a shot at the Champions League with Liverpool. The striker currently has an amazing 29 goals in 28 games and was named joint player of the month for March with fellow team-mate Steven Gerrard.

The record number of goals in a Premier League season with 38 games, is currently held by Cristiano Ronaldo and Alan Shearer who both scored 31. With five games left, Suarez could achieve both a top goalscorer award and Champions League football with the Reds but he has insisted if he could only choose one, it would be a top four finish.

The Uruguay striker has insisted that team success is more important than personal achievements and he said that is why he doesn’t take penalties instead of Gerrard. He said:

“If I wanted to do that I could ask Stevie if I could take a penalty, but I don’t like that. For myself, it is more important that Liverpool finish in a good position. I try in every game to score because I am a striker. I love to make goals but for me if I could swap being top scorer or winning the Golden Boot for the team finishing in the top four that would be more important.

Liverpool head into a huge game against Man City this weekend as league leaders and Suarez had this to say about it:

“For some people, it’s a surprise because in the Premier League it is difficult to win nine games in a row. But if we continue at this level, we’ll play very well. The team know we’ve had some really good performances in the last few weeks and we’ll try to continue in this way. Our target was to finish in the top four and we’ve won our last few games. We also know Chelsea and City dropped some points, so we’re at the top of the league now and that’s amazing for us.

“Now we can’t stop because we have a really good chance.”
