Suarez was substituted for Rafinha after 37 minutes of the first half.

The Barcelona striker had to be substituted because of an injury in the first half of the team’s opening Spanish league game on Friday.

The striker had the best chance of the first half, which finished 0-0, but hit the post when in on goal after a bad Unai Lopez pass back. Luis Suarez was complaining of the pain when the ball fell to him, but he could not finish.

Shortly after he was treated on the sideline then subbed for Rafinha Alcantara, who also hit the woodwork shortly after coming on.

Barcelona confirmed that the striker had suffered an injury to his right leg in a statement: “Tests carried out on Saturday morning have confirmed that first team player Luis Suarez has an injured right calf. His recovery will dictate his return to action.”

The Blaugrana’s season has already been hit with some bad news, as Lionel Messi also sustained a calf injury in training earlier this month and was not deemed ready for the match at San Mames.

The extent of the 32-year-old’s condition is still unknown and he could be omitted from Oscar Tabarez’s 24-man squad in the coming days, pending the results of medical scans. Although, it is expected that the injury could sideline him for three to four weeks.
