Sunderland are closing in on a move for Chelsea defender Patrick van Aanholt, after the 23-year-old confirmed that he will not be playing at Stamford Bridge next season.

The Dutchman has failed to break into The Blues’ first-team over the past two seasons, and he is now ready to leave the club permanently after coming to terms with the fact that he has no place under Jose Mourinho.

van Aanholt has spent loan spells at Newcastle, Leicester, Wigan and Vitesse Arnhem in the past two and a half years, and he is now ready to secure a permanent move away, with The Black Cats keep on landing him.

When asked about his future, the Dutchman admitted that it’s not at Stamford Bridge anymore.

‘Where will I play next season? I don’t know yet,’ said the 23-year-old. ‘It definitely won’t be at Chelsea. I am done here.’

According to a Sky Sports reporter, the two clubs are currently in talks and are trying to agree a fee for the defender.
