Arsenal have made contact with Belgian giants Anderlecht over a deal for defender Cheikhou Kouyate, his agent has revealed. The Gunners have been strongley linked with the 24 year old for the last 18 months, with Arsene Wenger said to be a huge admirer. And amid growing suggestions that ex-club captain Thomas Vermaelen could leave the club at the end of the season, Arsenal appear to be moving in on Kouyate. According to the defender’s agent, The Gunners have held talks with Anderlecht to try and thrash out a deal for one of the most sought after players around.

“Arsenal have been tracking Cheikhou and have now made enquiries [to Anderlecht],” said agent Saffet Balkan, “Galatasaray and CSKA have also been keeping their eye on him. Valencia made a bid in Janauary, but Anderlecht rejected the offer.”

A tall, strong, powerful centre back, Kouyate has been compared to former Gunners’ centre back Sol Campbell in the past because of his playing style. Arsenal are expecting to have to pay around ÂŁ8million for his services.
