Terry set for new one-year contract at Chelsea

Defender John Terry is playing his way towards a new contract at Chelsea.

The central defender – an iconic figure to the Stamford Bridge fans – has impressed manager Jose Mourinho this season and the indications are Terry will be offered a new one-year deal before the end of the current campaign.

Terry was 33 earlier this month and Chelsea have now adopted a policy of 12-month contract offers to those in the 30-plus age group.

That was the case with Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole.

But, while the talks with those England internationals were drawn out and generated talk of them leaving, the managerial circumstances have changed.

The last two bosses at Chelsea were Roberto di Matteo – who was sacked months after winning the Champions League – and Rafa Benitez, who was always in charge on a temporary basis.

With Mourinho back at Stamford Bridge, the scenario has changed.

He is in a four-year deal and owner Roman Abramovich has made it clear that he will follow the advice of the man who was so successful in his first spell at the club between 2004 and 2007.

Mourinho will inform the oligarch who he wants to stay and who he wants to let go and his recommendation will be acknowledged.

And Mourinho has been delighted with the form of Terry this season.

Ahead of yesterday’s match against Crystal Palace, Terry has been part of every Premier League team Mourinho has fielded this term.

And, while there has been speculation about whether Brazilian David Luiz fits into Mourinho’s plans, there has been no such doubt about Terry.

He will be free to talk to other clubs in Europe in January, as is his right. The same was true for both Lampard and Cole, but they opted to stay when Chelsea made their offer.

But, with Mourinho in a more powerful position that either of his predecessors, an earlier offer is likely to be made to Terry if he continues to impress his manager.

And there could be new deals for both Cole and Lampard if Mourinho decides they can contribute to the Chelsea cause next season.
