Sacked Fulham coach Rene Meulensteen believes the club’s owners ‘have panicked’ in their decision to replace him. The board have brought in German Felix Magarth with Fulham 5 points from safety in the league with 12 games to go. Meulensteen was removed from his post on Friday, just 11 weeks after being given the job, and holds the record for the shortest Premier League manager reign ever. Since his appointment Fulham have won just 3 times, while collecting just a point from the last six games. They were also knocked out of the FA Cup at home to Sheffield United.

“Chief executive Alistair Mackintosh rang me with the news that he had brought in Magarth,” said Maulensteen, “we had a meeting on Monday afternoon as our meetings had been going well. We knew we had to put some new life into the team, more energy and quality, and we addressed that in the transfer window and brought some players in.”

Regarding the clubs decision to replace him, he said, “It didn’t make any sense to me. You’d have thought they’d have done it three weeks earlier so that the new guy could bring some of his own players in.”

“But it’s a shame it’s turned out like this. However I enjoyed my time at Fulham and the fans were good.”
