Arsenal confirm winger is in talks with the club

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Theo Walcott is in contract talks with the club and they are hopeful his future will be decided before the start of the new season.

The England international has just one year left on his current deal, and with Liverpool reportedly interested in signing the pacy winger, there were fears he could quit the club on a free transfer next year.

Walcott has previously been in a contract saga with Arsenal, but despite all the reports and the rumours, the winger eventually stayed put at the Emirates Stadium despite his team-mates all leaving for Manchester City or Manchester United.

The winger was tempted to follow Robin Van Persie out of Arsenal for United, but he eventually snubbed the move and stayed put in North London.

Walcott has been making his way back into the first-team after suffering a serious knee injury against Tottenham Hotspur last January, and has so far made eight appearances this season.

The 26-year-old has spent a lot of time on the bench since his return, but Wenger has confirmed that he wants the winger to stay and will now hold talks with him regarding a new deal.

He said: “There’s no [update]. Yes we are already talking to him.

“Today I’m not in that kind of mode of thinking because I just want him to stay.

“When you go into negotiations with a player the desire is you want him to stay.

“We are always in the mode of being successful. A case of failure will only be in December next season.”
