Thibaut Courtois Backs Var After Controversial Decision Disallowed Ajax Goal

Thibaut Courtois has backed the Video Assistant Referee(VAR) after it ruled out Ajax’s goal in the Champions League last 16 tie against Real Madrid.

Nicolas Tagliafico appeared to have given the home side a lead as he headed home past Madrid custodian Courtois. But after consulting with VAR the on field referee disallowed the goal citing Dusan Tadic’s position.

VAR assessed the footage and found out that Tadic was in an offside position during the buildup of the goal and interfered with the goal keeper’s position stopping his path.

This decision was the first judgment of VAR since UEFA decided to introduce the system in the Champions League. Courtois said, “I think it was the right decision, when it happened I thought maybe offside

“It was a mistake by me but I went to go and catch it and Tadic made an attempt to shoot, yet didn’t touch it, and as he’s offside he’s offside.

“Because of his intention I made a quick movement and the ball bounced on my arm. It was an unlucky goal for me to concede but when I saw the screen I saw a possible offside.

“I think it was the correct decision and luckily for us there was VAR because otherwise nobody would have seen it.”
