Thibaut Courtois can become world’s best goalkeeper

Edwin van der Sar believes that Thibaut Courtois is well on his way to becoming the best goalkeeper in the world.

Courtois has done brilliantly over the last couple of seasons, helping Atletico Madrid to the La Liga title and a Champions League final last year before returning to Chelsea and making himself number one.

After an assured start to his Stamford Bridge career, the Belgian media and supporters are already claiming he could be the best keeper in the world right now.

But van der Sar, widely regarded as one of Manchester United’s best ever keepers, believes Courtois still has some way to go before that is true – claiming the Belgian needs to work on his communication with his team-mates first.

“Thibaut’s progress hasn’t surprised me. He has performed fantastically, when you see what he has achieved so far – I was already 23 when I got into Ajax’s first team squad.”

“You have to admire him because he has convinced Jose Mourinho to pick him ahead of Petr Cech – it must have been a difficult decision to drop a club legend like Cech.”

“Is he already the best in the world, like some in Belgium say? They say that too early nowadays, don’t you think? In my period the Dutch also thought I was the best in the world.”

“His career is going upwards, but he has some aspects in which he can still make progress.”

“One is his coaching on the pitch for example. His composure is excellent, but there’s a difference between shouting and coaching. Shouting is pretending, coaching is about trying to help your team.”

Courtois is expected to start on Sunday for Chelsea’s trip to Manchester United.
