Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen has been ruled out for up to 6 weeks due to a hamstring injury. Vermaelen started in Belgium’s Nations League fixture against Switzerland. However, he sustained the hamstring injury in the 73rd minute and had to leave the field. Dedryck Boyata replaced Vermaelen.

With Samuel Umtiti already injured, Vermaelen’s injury is a huge blow to Barcelona now that they have a string of tough matches ahead. Umtiti sustained a ligament injury which manager Ernesto Valverde thinks will rule him out for several months. Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet are the only two big centre-backs that Barcelona have right now.

Barca have a number of tough matches ahead. They take on table-toppers Sevilla on Saturday before a Champions League fixture against Inter Milan next Wednesday. Following the match against Inter, there is the highly anticipated El Clasico on the 28th.

Barcelona are already going through a rough time, having won none of their last four La Liga games. Hence, with some of their key defenders out, the going may get harder for the Blaugrana.
