Tito Vilanova dies aged 45

Football is in shock and mourning following the news that Tito Vilanova, former Barcelona manager, aged 45, has passed away after suffering throat cancer for a third time.

Barcelona CF are in ‘deep shock’ with the man who replaced Pep Guardiola passing away after battling a recurring tumour in his throat, and requiring emergency surgery on Thursday. This, unfortunately, was not enough, and the manager who won La Liga in his only season in charge at the club died on Friday.

It was the third time Vilanova had had to face the cancer, he was first diagnosed in November 2011, while assistant to Guardiola, before he took over the season after and scored a record breaking 100 points in La Liga to take the title.

He had a second tumour removed in December 2012, before stating in April 2013 that he felt fine and ‘never thought about quitting’. However, a relapse that summer caused him to suddenly resign as Barcelona’s manager.

Thoughts from myself and the whole team at Sillyseason go out to Vilanova’s family at this difficult time on an extremely sad day for football.
