The Atletico Madrid defender is set to join Spurs over London rivals Chelsea

Toby Alderweireld is reportedly set for a move to White Hart Lane, according to the Sunday Times.

There are reports the Belgian international thinks he will be granted more first-team opportunities if he joins Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Alderweireld, 26, thinks linking up with Belgium team-mate Jan Vertonghen would also massively boost his chances of making the starting XI for the European Championships next summer.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is rumoured to be considering the Atletico Madrid defender in a deal which could see Filipe Luis go the other way.

Luis, 29, only joined the Blues last summer for just under ÂŁ16million but a lack of starts under Mourinho has left the defender wanting a move away from Stamford Bridge.

Premier League experience

Should Alderweireld join Tottenham it would be the defender’s second spell in the Premier League after spending last season on loan at Southabmpton.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman also reportedly tried to make his move permanent – he supposedly lodged a bid of £5.7 million to convert the loan into a full transfer.

The Atletico player would be the second defender to be signed by Koeman in this transfer window after Cedric Soares completed a ÂŁ4.7million move from Sporting Lisbon.

Alderweireld, who played 26 times for the St. Mary’s side last season, could still remain in Spain with Atletico thought to cancel any move to Southampton for £1.4m.
