The forward was a target for the Red Devils

Schalke have completed the signing of Manchester United target Breel Embolo from FC Basel on a five-year contract for around £20 million.

The 19-year-old had been linked with a move to Old Trafford, amongst other top European clubs, but chose the Bundesliga outfit, after he was knocked out of the European Championships with Switzerland after Saturday’s shoot-out defeat to Poland in the last 16 of the European Championships.

Embolo made four appearances in France, after an impressive string of performances for Basel, which saw him make 90 appearances for the Swiss club.

He helped his side to three successive Swiss Super League titles, but has decided to now look to the next step in his career.

“With Breel Embolo we have gained a highly-talented attacker coveted by many top European clubs, who already has a lot of international experience.” said Schalke sporting director Christian Heidel.
